I would like to thank Normas Crane Service, Dr. Ann at Reata Equine clinic, Courtney Vincent for the harness, and my husband for putting up with me, lol. Mark did a great job getting her feet done while Kitty kept her head in Dr. Ann’s shoulders. We were able to take enough of the weight off of her other leg while she held her other leg up for Mark to shoe. She knows we are here to help her and she just amazed us all with her calm through all of this. She wasn’t scared of anything we did. If she pulls through all this, she has got to be the trusting horses I have ever met.

Streakin’ Kitty’s Progress-July 24th
Kitty is doing so much better today. We have hope for this little mare, and her story is heart breaking. We are going to need everyone’s help, as her recovery will be long and costly.
The shots she got the other day are working. We now have a harness to lift her, so that next we can get working on her feet. The costs for her shots (Adequan and Legend) are going to be a lot of money and we need help to keep her going, two shots per week (approximately $200.00 a week for her care.
She is only 6 years old and she spent the last 2 years of her life racing. Someone got a hold of her and self injected her with cortizone in her knee over and over to keep her running.
The damage done to her is extremely bad . . .she was dumped in the desert to die, when the livestock board found her, they brought her to HEART.
We believe she can come through all this. You are welcome to come see her and help us with this fight for her life.
See her on our web site and please lend us your support.

Attention All Concerned Horse Lovers
Recently you may have heard about foals in Fallon, Nevada who need homes. This rescue was being organized by another rescue group other than HEART of Tucson. From what we were told, these foals have all found homes in their nearby area, so fortunately for the foals, they will not have to endure the long trip down to Southern Arizona.
In the meantime, our organization has learned that there are horses and sometimes foals being taken to Mexico for slaughter from the Phoenix, AZ area. Foal meat is getting increasingly popular, especially in Europe. The feedlots are able to get more money per pound for the young horses.
HEART plans on teaming together with other horse rescue organizations in the Southern Arizona area. We plan on doing what we can to buy these foals from the feedlots and immediately finding qualified foster homes for these horses and then adopt them out to suitable homes.
We know we can’t save all of them, but we are doing what we can one horse at a time.
If you would like to help, we encourage you to donate in any way you can – money donated will be used towards veterinary care, farrier services, feed, medicine and supplements and purchasing horses bound for slaughter from the feedlots. We also are in need of tack, supplies, foster homes and permanent homes.
Please visit our website at Heartoftucson.org. From there, you an get in touch with us via e-mail, phone, or mail. We will update this blog frequently to keep you informed on what is going on with our horse rescue efforts.
Thank you all for your concern.

Chance’s Progress
Chance is the perfect example of why you don’t give up on horses. When we picked her up she was cold to the touch, and so emaciated – we weren’t sure if we could get her back. However, her will to live is winning. She is a little fighter and in only three weeks she is amazing us. If you look at her before pictures, and look at her today you can see why . . .
Streakin’ Kitty
Streakin’ Kitty is a California bred mare who ended up abandoned in the Southwest side of Tucson in the desert. She was picked up and dropped off at HEART. We had x rays taken on her legs because we could see she had some problems. Her left knee has a small fracture in it and lots of damage, and her coffin bone in her front right hoof is rotated.
We found she had a tattooed ID number and we were able to find out her name and that she is 6 years old and been a racehorse since she was 3, winning over $28,000. Her last race was in Sonoita sometime last year where she took third place.
We don’t know at this point yet if we can save her. Someone must know something about this horse, if you do, please contact HEART.
Streakin’ Kitty deserves so much more than this.
